-
- I have (finally) managed to ftp the 4 chameln*.zip files from
- ftp.netmanage.com. This was the *slowest* and least stable ftp
- connection I have ever participated in. Does anyone know whether
- netmanage is connected to the internet by telephone line or something?
- I never managed to get more than 1 and a fraction of the files in one
- session and it took at least 10 connections to netmanage.com to get
- the four files (counting the times I got less than one whole file, but
- not counting all the times when I could not connect at all). The last
- file chameln4.zip was 1071498 bytes and took more than 4500 seconds
- (for 0.234 kB/s if I recall accurately). Now, mind you, I am not
- looking a gift horse in the mouth so much as expressing curiosity
- about the connection. I did eventually get all the relevant files,
- I'm just real curious about it. (Morbid, some people might call me. :-)
-
- I also noted a bunch of files in the winsock1.1 directory immediately
- below the directory where the chameln*.zip files were located. Does
- anyone know what these are? It looks like these files may implement
- the winsock API. There is also a .zip file that may or may not
- contain all the other files. I am going to need something
- implementing the winsock API and it would certainly be easier if I
- could get a ready-made implementation that I could more or less plug
- into my app rather than starting from scratch. On the other hand, I
- would like to know what I am trying to get before I get it, especially
- at the speed (or rather lack thereof) of the connection to netmanage.
- I don't want to tie up netmange's phone lines (if that is what their
- connection is) for hours and hours downloading them for no good
- reason. If my guess about what is there turns out to be correct,
- would this same information be available elsewhere or would it be
- specific to the netmanage/chameleon winsock?
-
- As you can probably tell, I am a winsock/tcpip newbie. I have been
- "asked" to look into adding ethernet/slip capability to an app that we
- have here at Ball State and I am not really sure about how to go about
- doing that. I have been lurking on this newsgroup for a little bit
- now and have learned from doing so, but I clearly need to find
- something of an overview. I would appreciate any pointers that anyone
- might be able to give me in the way of either books or ftp'able docs.
- I have seen mention of the winsock API from microsoft.com, but I don't
- really expect that working bottom-up from the API will be my best way
- to get an overview. I will probably need to do that eventually
- anyway, but I would like a pointer to a more top-down view of windows
- sockets if I can get one.
-
- The app that I am working on currently uses serial connections and
- communicates with our VAXen (running VMS, though that is unlikely to
- be critical to this level of question) by just logging in and sending
- strings to the VAX and parsing the information that is returned. I
- saw a reference in another thread about how it is the responsibility
- of a telnet-type app to do some kind of negotiation with the host. I
- assume that any app that has to log in looking like a terminal (even a
- dumb terminal) must do whatever a telnet session must do. Any
- pointers to what that entails would help me out a great deal. I would
- be perfectly happy to read, but I simply do not know what to read at
- this time. Please do not waste your own valuable time trying to give
- me a complete education. If anyone can help me with some pointers to
- good books or online docs I will be very grateful. Send me email or
- post if you think anyone else would be interested.
-
- Thanks.

- Hi Roger,

-
- You bet. Two good ones that we use are:
-
- HP OpenView for Windows (v7.1)
- Castle Rock's SNMPc
-
- Also, as a result of the recent WinSNMP interoperability tests,
- we know that a number of Windows-hosted SNMP managers and
- applications are under development...some are very near completion
- and most will likely be shipping just after the May Interop show.
- Companies with products in this category include:
-
- American Computer
- Cabletron
- FTP Software
- Hewlett-Packard
- NetManage
- NetPort Systems
- Novell
-
- Also, I _believe_ that MultiPort Software, SimpleSoft, and possibly
- Spry are working on implementations and might intend to announce
- products at a future date.
-
- Most of the foregoing WinSNMP efforts run over WinSock.
-
- Also, a number of people are starting to work on the WinSNMP/Agent
- API too, which will undoubtedly support a WinSock interface among
- its transport options.
-
- All in all, it looks like it will be a bloomin' Spring for Windows-
- hosted SNMP products!
-
- (BTW, I almost always forget someone obvious in these messages...
- fortunately, it's usually someone different from the last time,
- so I hope you can see it's not intentional! :-)
-
- Let me know if you need more info in this regard.
-
- Regards,
